Example 1: Searching for a Modern Performance Classic – Ford Falcon AU II XR6
The Ford Falcon (AU series II) XR6 is a popular Aussie performance sedan from around 2000–2002.
Many were imported to NZ, but how many are still registered today?
Once models load, select Model: FALCON (or type "falcon" to filter).
In the Sub-model / Variant dropdown, look for something like XR6, AU II XR6, XR6 VCT, or similar (try typing "xr6" to filter quickly).
Optional: Narrow by Year From/To (e.g., 2000–2002) or Fuel Type: PETROL.
Hit Search.
Result: You'll see the current registered count, yearly breakdown, fuel types, and rarity level
(e.g., "Rare" or "Uncommon" depending on numbers). This helps confirm if your AU II XR6 is getting scarcer over time!
Example 2: Searching for a Vintage Classic – Morris 8
The Morris 8 is a tiny British pre-WWII economy car (1935–1948). Very few survive anywhere,
let alone in New Zealand — it's a true rarity.
Select Make: MORRIS (type "morris" if the list is long).
In Model, select 8 or Eight (variants might appear as "8", "Eight Series", "Series E", etc.).
Sub-model might be mostly blank or have minor variants (e.g., "Tourer", "Saloon") — you can leave it open or select specific ones.
Optional: Set Year From/To to something like 1935–1948 for precision.
Hit Search.
Result: Expect a very low count (possibly under 50 or even single digits nationwide).
This highlights how rare these 80–90-year-old cars are on NZ roads today — perfect for classic car enthusiasts or club members.
Tips for Best Results
Use Advanced Search for precise make/model/sub-model combos.
Keywords field works for extra filtering (e.g., "turbo", "cosworth", "manual").
Rarity levels are relative to NZ's ~5.8 million light passenger fleet — "Very Rare" usually means fewer than ~200–300 surviving.
Data is updated from official NZTA sources — counts can change slightly over time as vehicles are registered/de-registered.
What do the rarity levels mean?
Rarity is calculated relative to New Zealand's total light passenger fleet (~5.8 million vehicles). It tells you how unusual a car is on our roads today:
Extremely Common: Everyday cars you see everywhere (>100,000 left)
Very Common: Still very widespread (30,000–100,000)
Common: Typical modern cars (10,000–29,999)
Fairly Uncommon: You don't see them often (3,000–9,999)
Uncommon: Quite rare on the road (1,000–2,999)
Rare: Genuinely scarce (300–999)
Very Rare: Very few left – collector territory (100–299)
Extremely Rare: Almost unicorns – under 100 surviving
Numbers are approximate and can change slightly over time as vehicles are registered or de-registered.
